Bro. Baker's devotion:
Good morning brethren
We are going to study the Advancements of the Spiritual Life of the Saints as presented in the Psalms of Degrees. These are the 15 psalms from 120-134. The Jews divided them into 3 sections of 5 each, 1-5 Beginners ; 6-10 Progressors ; 11-15 the Aged.
The Psalms of degrees mark the steps of experience that the Saints go through in their Pilgrimage of the life of Faith. They are like Jacobs Ladder that he saw in his dream in Gen. 28:12 that had its "feet set up on the earth," but it's top "reached unto heaven", having the Lord standing above it, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon it.
These Psalms are then intended to be psalms of instruction and understanding the spiritual "Steps" of the righteous as they advance in there pilgrimage from the earth to the "House of God". We will take them "One Step at a Time", for that is how they are given. Our lives are lived by Degrees, just like the Sun Dial of Ahab, One degree at the time. And just like Hezekiah, the grace of God gave him 15 more degrees, so we see what those 15 degrees hold for our lives of grace as well.
Psalms 120, the first Step in the beginners life needs to be taken with the understanding that it is going to be met with by the slander and hatred of the world. From Abel to the last gathering of Gog and Magog against the camp of the saints in Rev. 20, the testimony of the world is that they, "Hated him and sent back a message that they would Not have This Man to reign over them". Our first step in our pilgrimage brethren is to experience the hatred of the world towards God through us. "marvel not if the world hates you, know that it hated me before it hated you."
" In my distress I cried unto the Lord, and he heard me. Deliver my soul, O Lord, from lying lips, and from a deceitful tongue. What shall be given unto thee? or what shall be done unto thee, thou false tongue? Sharp arrows of the mighty, with coals of juniper. Woe is me, that I sojourn in Mesech, that I dwell in the tents of Kedar! My soul hath long dwelt with him that hateth peace. I am for peace: but when I speak, they are for war." Ps. 120
Brethren, I can't give you better verses than these two : 1 Peter 4:1-4 and Matt. 10 :34-39, Read them, “ Forasmuch then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same mind: for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin; That he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will of God. For the time past of our life may suffice us to have wrought the will of the Gentiles, when we walked in lasciviousness, lusts, excess of wine, revellings, banquetings, and abominable idolatries: Wherein they think it strange that ye run not with them to the same excess of riot, speaking evil of you: Who shall give account to him that is ready to judge the quick and the dead.“(1 Peter 4:1-4) and " Matthew 10:34 (KJV)
34 Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword. 35 For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law. 36 And a man's foes shall be they of his own household. 37 He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. 38 And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me. 39 He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it. "(Matt. 10:34-39)
Our First Step in our Pilgrimage towards Heaven and the House of God is one that opens our eyes that we are Sojourners in Mesheck (Vanity Fair) and dwell in the " Tents of Kedar" (Darkness ; Song of Sol. 1:3), and because we have decided to go up to the house of God, the world hateth us.
Lord bless you children
