Every Wind of Doctrine (Ephesians 4:14)

Every Wind of Doctrine (Ephesians 4:14)

Ephesians 4:14 “That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;”

I like this verse because it promises freedom from deception.  It also promises that we can come to the point that we will know things for ourselves without having to ask for advice all the time.  It promises that we can stand with calm assurance, knowing the truth and knowing that nothing anyone says or does will sway us.

The ironic thing about this freedom from the deception of men is that it is only found through submitting to the teaching of men.  Not the cunning crafty men of vs. 14, but by submitting to the men of vs. 11.  “And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;”  So what makes the good men of verse 11 different from the evil men of verse 14?  They are different because the good men are gifts sent to us from God. (verse 8  ”...and gave gifts unto men”)

The problem is trying to figure out which ones are gifts from God and which ones are just cunning crafty men who want to deceive us.  The answer is that the bad ones will force you to put confidence in them and their “every wind of doctrine”, while the good ones will cause you to be “no more children, tossed to and fro…”.  In other words, false teachers and preachers will cause to doubt the scriptures, while true teaches and preaches will give you confidence in the scriptures.  This confidence in the scriptures, in turn, will cause us to fulfill verse 13 “Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ:”
